"Memories Don’t Grow Old" began as a poem written around 2019. Unlike many Country Fox Music songs, it was not inspired by a particular person, place, or event. It simply grew from thinking about the importance of memory and the remarkable way our memories allow us to revisit people, places, and moments long after they have passed.
As the years go by, so much around us changes. People come and go, familiar places look different, children grow older, and chapters of our lives quietly close. Yet a memory can suddenly carry us back across the years—to a voice we can still hear, a face we can still see, a place we once called home, or an ordinary moment that became more meaningful with time.
There is also a more difficult side to memory. Age and disease can gradually take away those treasured connections to the past. When memories begin to fade, something precious can seem to disappear with them—not only for the person experiencing that loss, but also for the family and friends who share those memories.
Years after the original poem was written, Country Fox Music felt its message deserved another life through music. The poem became "Memories Don’t Grow Old", a song about holding close the moments and people that have shaped our lives while we still can.
Time may change many things, but the memories we carry remind us where we have been, who we have loved, and a little of who we are.
LYRICS
Memories fade, but they don't disappear
Some feel distant, some still crystal clear
Like threads woven through this heart of mine
An old cracked mirror, starin' back through time
Into the night, some slip away
Till a flash of light brings 'em back to stay
Deep in my soul, I've always known
I'm made of more than the parts I've shown
I hope my memories don't grow old
If they do, Lord, I might just fold
Like a bedsheet packed away in a drawer
Forgotten, untouched, like it mattered no more
'Cause so much of what was still feels gold
Yeah, I pray my memories don't grow old
Windshield shows where the road might lead
Rearview shows who I used to be
They lift me up, they make me strong
Give me faith to keep movin' on
Chasin' tomorrow can wear you thin
But yesterday's where my strength begins
I've been seen, I've been loved, I've been known
That's enough when I'm out here alone
I hope my memories don't grow old
If they do, Lord, I might just fold
Like a bedsheet packed away in a drawer
Forgotten, untouched, like it mattered no more
'Cause so much of what was still feels gold
Yeah, I pray my memories don't grow old
Some of those days feel lost somehow
But I still see 'em clear right now
We were wild, we were young, we were free
That's the beauty of what used to be
Yeah, I hope my memories don't grow old
If they do… I don't wanna know
'Cause so much of what was still feels gold
More than words could ever hold
Lord, every moment, every soul
Is why I pray my memories don't grow old
